How To Learn English!

Here are some tips which may help you to master the English Language!

Speak without Fear

The biggest problem most people face in learning a new language is their own fear. They worry that they won’t say things correctly or that they will look stupid so they don’t talk at all.  Don’t do this.  The fastest way to learn anything is to do it – again and again until you get it right.  Like anything, learning English requires practice. Don’t let a little fear stop you from getting what you want.

Use all of your Resources

Even if you study English at a language school it doesn’t mean you can’t learn outside of class.  Using as many different sources, methods and tools as possible, will allow you to learn faster.  There are many different ways you can improve your English, so don’t limit yourself to only one or two.  The internet is a fantastic resource for virtually anything, but for the language learner it's perfect.

Surround Yourself with English

The absolute best way to learn English is to surround yourself with it.  Take notes in English, put English books around your room, listen to English language radio broadcasts, watch English news, movies and television.  Speak English with your friends whenever you can. The more English material that you have around you, the faster you will learn and the more likely it is that you will begin “thinking in English.” .

Listen to Native Speakers as Much as Possible

There are some good English teachers that have had to learn English as a second language before they could teach it.  However, there are several  reasons why many of the best schools prefer to hire native English speakers. One of the reasons is that native speakers have a natural flow to their speech that students of English should try to imitate.  The closer ESL / EFL students can get to this rhythm or flow, the more convincing and comfortable they will become.

Watch English Films and Television

This is not only a fun way to learn but it is also very effective.  By watching English films (especially those with English subtitles) you can expand your vocabulary and hear the flow of speech from the actors.  If you listen to the news you can also hear different accents.

Listen to English Music

Music can be a very effective method of learning English.  In fact, it is often used as a way of improving comprehension.  The best way to learn though, is to get the lyrics (words) to the songs you are listening to and try to read them as the artist sings.  There are several good internet sites where one can find the words for most songs. This way you can practice your listening and reading at the same time.  And if you like to sing, fine.

Study As Often As Possible!

Only by studying things like grammar and vocabulary and doing exercises, can you really improve your knowledge of any language.

Do Exercises and Take Tests

Many people think that exercises and tests aren't much fun.  However, by completing exercises and taking tests you can really improve your English. One of the best reasons for doing lots of exercises and tests is that they give you a benchmark to compare your future results with.  Often, it is by comparing your score on a test you took yesterday with one you took a month or six months ago that you realize just how much you have learned.  If you never test yourself, you will never know how much you are progressing.. Keep doing this and you really will make some progress with English.

Record Yourself

Nobody likes to hear their own voice on tape but like tests, it is good to compare your tapes from time to time.  You may be so impressed with the progress you are making that you may not mind the sound of your voice as much.

Listen to English

By this, we mean, speak on the phone or listen to radio broadcasts, audiobooks or CDs in English. This is different than watching the television or films because you can’t see the person that is speaking to you.  Many learners of English say that speaking on the phone is one of the most difficult things that they do and the only way to improve is to practice.

Finally

Have fun!

Think how many people have sat next to you on a bus, train, whatever. Now think how many people have sat next to you on purpose, with their fingers crossed in hope that you’ll talk to them. I’m sure somebody has. There’s plenty of times when somebody’s seen you and hoped that you spoke to them, but you never did, ‘cause you don’t have the guts, and neither do they. Don’t go around thinking nobody likes you and that you’re not loved, there’s been plenty of times when a stranger’s spotted you and thought “oh they’re just my type,” but haven’t had the courage or confidence to open their mouth and initiate a conversation, the funny thing is, neither have you.

Lindsay Lohan Sentenced to Jail, Out on Bail by Bedtime

Lindsay Lohan é condenado à prisão, em liberdade sob fiança por mal tempo
ASSISTA O VÍDEO E A REVISÃO DA REPORTAGEM A BAIXO..

Face a judge in court, get sentenced to jail, file an appeal (apresentar um recurso)and bail yourself out early... all in a day’s work for actress Lindsay Lohan.

Late Friday night in Los Angeles, after no more than five hours behind bars, LiLo was liberated from her latest jail sentence. So, what was she in there for this time? (VIDEO:TMZ)

“A judge said she violated probation in connection with her necklace theft case. But the judge reduced a charge from a felony to a misdemeanor.(crime de contravenção)

In court, she denied stealing a necklace from a Venice retail store earlier this year. She walked out wearing it, without paying. Lohan says it was an honest mistake, but the store owner says she stole the jewelry worth $2,500.

Some observers call it luck. She got out of a felony charge and out of jail before bedtime. But, HLN’s Jane Velez-Mitchell calls it celebrity treatment.

“I believe in compassion, but I believe in compassion across the board. I don’t believe in selective compassion. If we’re going to start being compassionate as a society lets be compassionate to everyone, not just this gorgeous starlet(estrelinha) who goes into court with a low-cut top.( peça de vestuário tem um decote assimétrico e muitocavado sem abertura)And that’s where I draw the line."

Lohan is familiar with the arrest gig, to say the least. She’s been in similar situations four times.
(PHOTO: TMZ)

But a legal analyst for ABC says Lohan got the standard treatment for cases like this.

DAN ABRAMS, LEGAL ANALYST: “Because the reality of it is, when you file a notice of appeal on something like this, the standard, ordinary course of business is that you become eligible for bail. Bail in this case was $75,000. She put it up. She’s been released, for now. That doesn’t mean she’s not going to go to jail.”

So, maybe Lohan isn’t being treated like a privileged celebrity this time around, but is she acting like one? The prosecuting attorney says yes, because the legal problems are having no impact on her behavior.

“She’s not taking this seriously. I’ve tried to impart that on four judges, and obviously, they feel a different way.”

Lohan’s next court date is in May. In the meantime, the judge wants her to start doing nearly 500 hours of community service.

Love The Way You Lie

Just gonna stand there and watch me burn
But that's alright because I like the way it hurts
Just gonna stand there and hear me cry
But that's alright because I love the way you lie
I love the way you lie

I came to dance, dance, dance, dance
I hit the floor
'Cause that's my plans, plans, plans, plans
I'm wearing all my favourite
Brands, brands, brands, brands
Give me some space for both my hands, hands, hands, hands
Cause it goes on and on and on
And it goes on and on and on
Yeah!

I throw my hands up in the air sometimes
Saying AYO!
Gotta let go!
I wanna celebrate and live my life
Saying AYO!
Baby, let's go!

Just gonna stand there and watch me burn
But that's alright because I like the way it hurts
Just gonna stand there and hear me cry
But that's alright because I love the way you lie
I love the way you lie

I came to move, move, move, move
Get out the way of me and my crew, crew, crew, crew
I'm in the club so I'ma do, do, do, do
Just what I came here to do, do, do, do
Yeah!
Cause it goes on and on and on
And it goes on and on and on
Yeah!

I throw my hands up in the air sometimes
Saying AYO!
Gotta let go!
I wanna celebrate and live my life
Saying AYO!
Baby, let's go!

Just gonna stand there and watch me burn
But that's alright because I like the way it hurts
Just gonna stand there and hear me cry
But that's alright because I love the way you lie
I love the way you lie

I'm gonna take it all like
I'm gonna be the last one standing
Higher over all like
I'm gonna be the last one landing
'Cause I, I, I, I believe it
And I,
I just want it all, I just want it all
So put your hands in the air

You make me
Feel like I'm living
A Teenage Dream
The way you turn me on
I can't sleep
Let's run away
And don't ever look back
Don't ever look back

My heart stops
When you look at me
Just one touch
Now baby I believe
This is real
So take a chance
And don't ever look back
Don't ever look back

Just gonna stand there and watch me burn
But that's alright because I like the way it hurts
Just gonna stand there and hear me cry
But that's alright because I love the way you lie
I love the way you lie

I throw my hands up in the air sometimes
Saying AYO!
Gotta let go!

Just gonna stand there and watch me burn
But that's alright because I like the way it hurts

'Cause we gon' rock this club
We gon' go all night
We gon' light it up
Like it's dynamite!

 explanations

GONNA= (coll.) Be going to.
WATCH ME BURN= The sensory verbs (see, watch, sound, taste, feel hear) can be followed by infinitive without to (as in this example) or by -ing, but there's a little difference in meaning:
+ INF WITHOUT TO (you perceive the complete action, from beginning to end)
- I saw him cross the street (I saw all the action)
- I heard him sing a song (I heard all his song)

+ -ING (you perceive that person/animal/thing in the middle of the action)
- I saw him crossing the street (when I looked, he was crossing the street, but I didn't see the beginning of the action and maybe I didn't see the end of the action either)
- I heard him singing a song (I just heard a fragment of the song)

I HIT THE FLOOR= (coll.) If you hit a place, you go there. The floor here refers to the dance floor.

'CAUSE= (coll.) Because (also spelled COZ in BrE and CUZ in AmE)

THAT'S MY PLANS= It should be "those are my plans" or "that's my plan". The author was probably thinking of "my plans" as a package, as one thing, so he uses a singular verb (informal English can be much more flexible, but standard English would consider this a mistake).

BRANDS= A trademark or distinctive name identifying a product or a manufacturer. Famous brands in clothing are: Levis, G-Star, Lacoste...

FOR BOTH MY HANDS= For my two hands.

IT GOES ON= It continues. The form "it goes on and on and on" is emphatic, so it means "it never stops".

I THROW MY HANDS UP IN THE AIR= I put my arms high up.

AYO= It's a merging of "Hey, Yo!", two colloquial greetings put together. It is mainly used when addressing an individual in any given situation to get his or her attention.

GOTTA LET GO= I have to relax.

MY CREW= (informal) My friends.

CLUB= Disco.
I'MA= (coll.) I'm going to.
LIKE= The word "like" may be a verb or a preposition, but here it is used as a conjunction, which happens a lot in informal English, especially in America. -Preposition: You are beautiful like the moon
-Conjunction: You look tired like you have been working all day
The standard construction would be using the conjunction "AS IF"
- You look tired as if you had been working all day
In the song we can see several constructions with LIKE as a connector:
- I'm gonna take it all like I'm gonna be the last one standing
- Higher over all like I'm gonna be the last one landing
- We gon' light it up like it's dynamite

All these sentences would be in standard English AS IF + past:
We gon' light it up like it's dynamite = We're going to light it up as if it were dynamite.

YOU TURN ME ON= You excite me, you impress me.

RUN AWAY= Escape, flee.

TAKE A CHANCE= Risk, this is your opportunity.

DON'T EVER LOOK BACK= Never have regrets (don't look back to the past)
GON'= (coll.) gonna = be going to
We gon' rock this club = We're going to rock this disco (we're going to party wilder than anyone else)
We gon' go all night = We're going to be dancing all night long
We gon' light it up = We're going to bring fun to it
ROCK= (coll.) If you rock a place you agitate it, you cause a commotion there, in this case because you party and dance so much and good that everybody gets overexcited about you.
LIGHT IT UP= If you light something up, you put fire to it so it starts burning. The song says "we gon' light it up like it's dynamite", it means: we're going to make it burn just as you make dynamite burn and it explodes". To make the club explode means to start a wild party, to have great fun.
